Mark Buchanan, author of HOLY WILD gave the following illustration in a sermon preached near the end of the year.
He was discussing the temptation to be fixated on the "signs" God gives instead of searching for the "thing signified" ... as the shepherds had the sign of a sky-full of angels that lead them to a cave filled with hay and a screaming baby.
Mistaking the sign for the thing signified would be like driving to Orlando and finding a sign that says, "Welcome to Disney World", pulling over right there, unpacking, and telling his kids to have a great time.
"Now this one is important ... in the hallway you will see signs that say 'RESTROOM'. Those are not the restrooms, they are only signs pointing the way. Seek the reality of the restrooms! I cannot stress this enough!"
I'm not sure if this is funny in print ... but me and my wife were busting a gut listening to the sermon.
