I was in Dunkin Donuts this morning and noticed an older woman who kept looking at me. This slowly became frustrating, and as I waited for 5 minutes in line, I could tell that her eyes rarely left me.
I was on the brink of saying something to her when she apologized and said, "I'm sorry, but you remind me of my son. You see, he died a few years ago and I never got to say good-bye to him. You look just like him."
She hesitated, then added, "This might sound crazy, and I don't want to intrude, but when I leave could you say, "Goodbye Mom"? That might help me get a bit of closure, and would really make my day.
Blushing at my earlier frustration, I tried to smile and agreed. We made small talk through the rest of our wait in line, and as she picked up her order in front of me, she walked to the door, turned and said, "Good Bye Honey!"
I smiled back, said, "Good bye Mom!" and watched her go.
Turning to the counter, the clerk said, "Your Mom said you'd pay for her breakfast."
(Someone told this on the train today, I figured it was worth sharing. Happy April Fool's Day! The good news is that we get to be fools for Christ every day of the year
