Any thoughts on the various takes on emerging church? What about the Reformed flavor of this e.g. Mars Hill (Mark Driscoll), Redeemer (Tim Keller)?

I haven't read this book but have had some discussions about the Emerging Church movement. It seems to be another varient on the Purpose Driven/Seeker Sensative church thing.
Basically a consumer oriented Church. There are a few good Ideas appearing as sparsly scattered islands in a sea of toucy feely theological mush. Paul Varga (Mostly harmless, and almost sane)

I have not read Christopher Wright's book, but I have read Dan Kimball's book on Emerging Worship and gather that much of the same concepts of Wright's book exists in Kimball's. While Kimball's book has some very good ideas, and a very interesting and practical church model, I'm still in process as to the depth of the emerging church/worship movement. In addition to Kimball's book, I've read some other materials on the subject and so far my best description would be that it seems to skirt the no-creed-but-Christ mantra, which leaves it wide open as an inconsistent model when it comes to doctrinal formulation and adherence.
I do believe that the movement is fueled by leaders that are seeking a genuine and close relationship with Jesus that incorporates authentic repentance with self-denial (which is refreshing and energizing), the only problem with this is without a consistent doctrinal reference point, worship/repentance/relationship I believe is naturally influenced more by cultural demands rather than biblical demands. Thus, felt need becomes king, rather than Scripture providing us with a model that is changing/shaping our felt needs so that they align with the Spirit of Christ as we are conformed to Christ's image. I do believe we should meet people where they are, but always in balance, keeping in mind the spirit of Paul as he sought to be all things to all men, but yet demanded that we "militantly" protect the message of the gospel. I don't actually wouldn't think Wright's book was simliar to Kimball's at all. I believe Wright's is just talking about missional, God's mission for His church and His people.

oh, another thing I think to keep in mind when discussing emerging/emergent is that not all churches are the same, e.g. Mark Driscoll and Mars Hill does in fact hold fairly tightly to doctrine and creeds, another church that would fall under this is Redeemer and Tim Keller.

True, there are exceptions in every system or movement, but there are predominant characteristics by which one can identify a belief system compared to another so as to make a distinction.
I wouldn't put Tim Keller under the emerging church rubric at all. I think Keller is developing a progressive movement within Reformed circles that borrows from the emerging church (and others), but only as it fits within Redeemer's core theological ideas and philosophy of ministry, which is still heavily Reformed, and in my opinion is not enough to say Redeemer is "emerging". Remember that the "Emerging" church and the "Emergent" church are two different movements. Driscoll is not part of the Emergent church and has distanced himself from it. In the beginning, he had some ties with those guys but removed himself from it when they started leaning toward loose and liberal theology. Most of those people involved in the Emergent movement are somewhat confused themselves on what exactly is meant by the Emergent movement.

totally agree, there is much to be learned fro the "missional" movemement e.g. Tim Keller, Ed Stetzer, Driscoll, etc which has really just been an extenstion of missiology applied to the US.
