I think it sends the wrong message. In worship, as we ascend into the heavenly places, we are not citizens of the United States, of Canada, of Germany, of Japan, or of any earthly nation. Our citizenship is in heaven, and worship is particularly a time when that should be most evident. We are not members of the American church -- we are members of Christ's church, which is universal.

Now, is this something akin to putting an image of a pagan deity in the sanctuary? No; it's not something that I would call an "abomination." If I were to visit a church with an American flag up front, I would not get up and walk out. But I think it falls in the area of those symbols which either support a Biblical worldview or detract from it.

I have no problems with an American flag at other church functions. Veteran's Day is coming up -- we can certainly have a fellowship time, replete with American flag decorations, to honor our veterans. I just believe our time of special worship should emphasize our heavenly citizenship.
