Gary North states, "Without any doubt in my own mind, after years of study of the history of occultism, after having researched historical research, I can say with confidence: These games are the most effective, most magnificently packaged, most profitably marked, most thoroughly researched introduction to the occult in man's recorded history, period. This is NO game." Though I do not agree with much of North's theology on several issues, I do not think he is "over-the-top" with this particular statement. D&D is a well researched game. For example, there is now a whole line of materials based on the H.P. Lovecraft Cthulhu mythos, a form of magic practiced in Satanism - a system of magic prominently featured in The Satanic Rituals by Anton LaVey (previously the head of the Church of Satan)! The occult connections include: (a) demons, well described and illustrated (including pornography, the succubus), with names and powers copied directly from occult books. It is a very well marketed game with sells which are "over-the-top." "As of 2006, Dungeons & Dragons remains the best-known and best-selling role-playing game, with an estimated 20 million people having played the game and more than 1 billion in book and equipment sales." (Ryan S. Dancey (February 7, 2000). "Adventure Game Industry Market Research Summary (RPGs) and Hite, Kenneth (March 30, 2006). State of the Industry 2005: Another Such Victory Will Destroy Us. GamingReport.com). And it is definitely used as an "introduction to the occult," as I brought out earlier … The only problem one might have is that, "This is no game," because for some it can be just a game (misdirected, but …). However, D&D is also an "occult tool" and not just a game. Though I am not a certified expert on RPGs, I am on the occult and have testified in various courts of law numerous times on such matters. North's statement is factual. The game is an introduction to the occult. It is one thing to study about the occult and false gods, etc as Daniel had to do. However, it is quite another to imagine and participate to some degree in activities sanctioned by the occult - against God. How can anyone justifiy this is Christian? Remember, we are to "bring into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ" (2 Cor. 10:15). We are commanded to meditate on scripture (Josh. 1:8 ), think on good, healthy things (Phil. 4) and to be transformed in our thinking (Rom. 12:2). This is not possible if we are role playing in occult games. Next some will be saying they can role play a rape and it not be wrong....
In Christ,
