Why would you wonder about the future of the CREC? That denomination is primarily made up of FV folks (Doug Wilson et al.), and so I would think Wilkins and
any others would just be finding a friendly association.
If you're implying that the FV folks might be inherently schismatic, and thus would bring dissension wherever they go, I truly don't believe that, knowing some of them personally. If you notice, the FV folks did not try to promote their views to the rest of the PCA -- they just wanted to be accepted as being within the umbrella of acceptable Reformed beliefs. They did not try to make the rest of the PCA adhere to FV, although I'm sure they would hope that would happen in time. They would have been content staying in the PCA, if the PCA would let them stay.
Not having spoken to Steve, I can't speak for him, but I suspect his church is leaving the PCA because they can see that there is nothing but continual doctrinal battle ahead of them. They want to be left alone to build the kingdom by preaching the Word faithfully, rather than having to devote so much of their energies to defending this one particular area of doctrine.
