I have to giggle when I consider that "Billy Joel" is the pop-culture icon mentioned here. Most of the time Billy Joel is a step (or leap) up from what I have been listening to.
Here's where it gets interesting. Consider the group Alice in Chains. They have a great sound (my opinion) and some good lyrics. But they do have one song "God in the Box" that has some seemingly anti-Christian lyrics (line in the chorus is "Deny your master").
A "worse" group is Nine Inch Nails (referring the the nails that were driven through Christ, supposedly nine-inches long by some tradition). This group gives my the shudders more often than not and songs like Closer (I want to *delete* you like an animal) are played on the radio and contain nothing but filth. However .... they do have a keeper. The song "Head Like a Hole" tells us:
That sounds right to me. Chalk this one up to General Revelation.
As has been said, there are no absolutes here. Music, Movies and TV fall into the "Meat Sacrificed to Idols" category. If I come to your house, you should give a moments thought to whether having American Idol IV on will lead me into temptation. Raising my daughter, I need to prayerfully decide if Xena is an appropriate role-model/entertainment outlet, and when she asks what the difference between the "gods" like Poseidon and Zeus and the God of the Bible (which she will) how will I handle it.
I'm not an isolationist. Right now I'm going through a season in my life where I feel the need to participate in less culture and more church. Its okay for me to follow this inner prompting ... didn't Paul disappear into the desert for a few years for reflection? Its not okay for me to take this inner prompting and teach it as a law.
That being said, the Hulk was just released on DVD. Can't wait to rent it. Gamma-Radiated Poodles! w00t!
