It is a tale of good versus evil written by a devout catholic. Not to say that it shouldn't be read but once you understand that then it is easiler to understand the imagery. The hobbits offering prayers of deliverance to one of the valar named Elbereth, the Mary-like queen of the stars to name one instance. I guess the struggle of Frodo to do his good works for the church by returning the ring and might be another, and could Gollum be a picture of a soul in purgatory?
