Wilkins and church leaving PCA |
Lead | ||
|
I heard that Steve Wilkins's church, Auburn Avenue PC, voted to leave the PCA last Sunday. They are heading to the CREC.

What now | #2 | ||

Rod, thanks for the info.
Now, I wonder what will the other FVers in the PCA will do. If the CREC grows by bringing in FVers there is not much hope for that denom. I see either a split within that denom or I cannot imagine what it would look like in years to come.

Future of the CREC | #3 | ||

Why would you wonder about the future of the CREC? That denomination is primarily made up of FV folks (Doug Wilson et al.), and so I would think Wilkins and
any others would just be finding a friendly association.
If you're implying that the FV folks might be inherently schismatic, and thus would bring dissension wherever they go, I truly don't believe that, knowing some of them personally. If you notice, the FV folks did not try to promote their views to the rest of the PCA -- they just wanted to be accepted as being within the umbrella of acceptable Reformed beliefs. They did not try to make the rest of the PCA adhere to FV, although I'm sure they would hope that would happen in time. They would have been content staying in the PCA, if the PCA would let them stay. Not having spoken to Steve, I can't speak for him, but I suspect his church is leaving the PCA because they can see that there is nothing but continual doctrinal battle ahead of them. They want to be left alone to build the kingdom by preaching the Word faithfully, rather than having to devote so much of their energies to defending this one particular area of doctrine.

CREC | #4 | ||
|
Rod,
You are correct that AAPC and Wilkins will now be able to minister in peace which is vitally important for any ministry. Now, I do not see the FVers as being benigned as you described them. Yes, they stayed mostly away from open confrontation, but their rhetoric was progressively alive and loud in the blogosphere. But hey, no movement can control its most extreme, vocal adherents. The reason why I wouldn't be surprise of any schism within is the CREC is this. What drives that denom? It is not FV, per se. They have a lot of self-proclaimed agrarians within their group of churches. Some will be wanting to push the button at a quicker pace and it could possible bring about tension. .

FV distinctive holders were not successful in persuading the PCA that it could tolerate its teaching from the pulpit and a lot of acrinmony was spent on either
side. But the question was always whether or not FV fit well with the WCF and not whether FVers were Christians. FVers separating into another denomination is
really an administrative rather than punitive matter by itself.

Sorry, I didn't intend to defend Wilkins' theology at this point. I was trying to look at their action of leaving the PCA from their own perspective --
to try to see things as they see them. I believe that, from their perspective, they simply want to be left alone to preach the gospel as they see best.
