The baby was wonderful, but perhaps the reality he was a "sign" of is the in-breaking of the Kingdom of Heaven. God in the flesh is one thing (a pretty magnificant thing) ... God incarnate ushering the Kingdom of Heaven, atoning for our sins and breaking down the dividing wall of hostility ... that is more wonderful indeed.

Though I think in this case, "sign" means more "this is how you will know you've found the right thing" rather than "this points to a greater reality." There's no greater reality than that baby.

He was discussing the temptation to be fixated on the "signs" God gives instead of searching for the "thing signified" ... as the shepherds had the sign of a sky-full of angels that lead them to a cave filled with hay and a screaming baby.
